In the U.S. four out of every 10 homes has at least one dog in it. Let’s not even mention cats! Dogs love to run, jump, play…and make messes and scratch hardwood flooring. What can one do? NYNJ Flooring has a few suggestions to protect your hardwood flooring.
First, be honest about your pet’s behavior and how clean you want to keep your flooring. If you have a well behaved dog, that will help. However, well behaved or not, it’s always best to trim your pet’s nails and keep them groomed.
Assuming you’re not going to give up your hardwood flooring and go to carpet, vinyl, linoleum, or tile/stone (the whole point, right!), you can make some other choices. While not a native hardwood, cork and bamboo flooring are great for standing up against wear.
For the best hardwood floor, you will need a “hard” hardwood, one with the highest Janka hardness score you can find. Pre-finished flooring from factory typically comes with a tough finish that will give you that hardwood look but be tough enough to withstand pets. A high-quality floor with 8/9 layers of finish will certainly do the trick.
Imported woods, though, are another option. Ipe, Brazilian Cherry, and Walnut are excellent considerations, as is White Oak. Hard Maple and Hickory are contenders, but are a little more money.
If at all possible, steer clear of woods like larch, pine, or teak. They are soft and just won’t stand up long against pets.
If you have a hardwood floor that you want to keep but restore, you can call a pro like NYNJ Flooring to repair and refinish your flooring. Often they can be re-sanded, re-stained and re-finished.
