Any type of flooring requires proper upkeep on a consistent basis in order to rid your home of unwanted debris, such as dirt and grime. Carpeting can be harder to maintain since dirt tends to settle deep into the fibrous texture of the weave, which can involve steam-cleaning and shampooing your carpet just to extract the filthy substance in the hopes of salvaging it from replacement. Hardwood floors are reputable for being low maintenance, which is a primary quality that lends to their longevity.

People who own hardwood flooring are at a distinct advantage to not ever having to experience significant issues that threaten the integrity of their floors. Spillage is a common occurrence on any type of flooring, but with hardwood it can be easily wiped clean with an absorbent cloth or microfiber mop. If you wear shoes inside, you’re likely to leave trails of tread imprints overlapping each other, which are easily removed with a cursory sweep of a mop and wood cleanser to give it a sheeny touch. Also, moving furniture is a common impulse that many people get from time to time. So, if you decide to shuffle around various pieces and, during the process, end up scratching or making accidental notches into the textural surface, you can easily remedy the problem by sanding and staining the marred area to make it harmonious again with the entirety of your floor. It’s very important to keep your hardwood floors free of dirt because it prevents allergens from developing and it also helps to preserve the life of the wood.

Keeping your hardwood floors maintained is relatively easy and fast. All it takes is a little TLC to stave off collection of dirt and grime, which can be conducive to the longevity of your hardwood floors for the life of your home. At NYNJ Flooring we can help you select your ideal hardwood and extend some useful pointers about proper maintenance. Bring History Home with Hardwood Floors

Posted by - nynj-flooring

NYNJ Flooring has a history of providing customers with top-quality hardwood floors, exceptional service and affordable prices. Hardwood flooring has a history as well.

The earliest settlers in America made do with earthen flooring at first, but eventually colonists began crafting thick, wide planks of wood from America’s old-growth forests. It was a grueling process.

It would take a minimum of two men hours and hours to cut these planks from the huge logs they had harvested. They used a long, two-handled saw to cut down the wood into floor planks. The end result was very different from the refined, sophisticated hardwood floors that NYNJ installs today.

The wide boards were nailed into place and there was no sanding or staining involved. It was a simple wood floor and the elements took a toll. Wood expands and contracts as the weather changes, and the settlers probably had to deal with gaps that would form in the floor. The gaps gave creatures an easy way to enter the shelter. These early floors were far from glamorous. Just imagine the splinters!

When the 18th century rolled around, people had begun painting the interior walls of their homes in bright colors. It wasn’t long before floors were being painted as well. Back then, people were fond of painting designs on the floor. A checkerboard pattern was a popular choice.

The Industrial Revolution changed everything. Machines were invented that could handle the intricacies of wood cutting, tongue-and-groove came along and suddenly hardwood flooring was all the rage. The wood still had to be scraped by hand when it was installed, since there were no electric sanders. Shellac was applied, changing the wood’s coloring, and the floor was waxed. It was a slow process.

Today, the process is much simpler. NYNJ Flooring handles everything from start to finish. We have designers to help you choose the wood, and professional sanders and installers to finish it up. Isn’t it time you put some history into your house?

8 Tips for Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors

Posted by - nynj-flooring

If you’ve ever watched a professional basketball game, you probably noticed the court’s shiny hardwood floors. How do they keep the hardwood gleaming? Can my hardwood installed by NYNJ Flooring look like that?

Of course it can. All you need to do is follow a few simple guidelines and your floors will shine for a lifetime.

  1. Consider going shoeless in your rooms with hardwood flooring. Remember sock hops in the 1950s? Kids would gather in the school gym on weekend nights to dance and shoes were not allowed on the gym’s wood floors. Tell your family that every day is a sock hop. Guests are just passing through, so don’t make them go barefoot.
  2. Make sure you have felt pads on the bottoms of all furniture or consider using throw rugs with non-skid pads. Also, carpet runners can be used in hallways that see heavy traffic.
  3. Toss your old straw broom and buy a newer model with soft bristles. Use it only when you need to pick up larger debris. Use a duster or static cloth mop for more frequent cleaning.
  4. If you have pets, keep their claws trimmed. Tiny little feet can make big scratches.
  5. Vacuuming hardwood is OK, but make sure the machine’s rollers are smooth and clean so you don’t leave scratches or scuffs. Most vacuums have a hardwood floor setting.
  6. Put about a cup of white vinegar in a mop bucket with warm water. Dip the mop and wring it out so it’s just damp. Avoid large amounts of water, especially on older floors. If you use a store-bought cleaning product, check the label to see if it’s safe for sealed wood floors.
  7. Don’t wax a hardwood floor that is sealed with polyurethane. The wax will build up and begin to make the wood look dull.
  8. Use a polish that is specifically made for hardwood flooring. Don’t overdo it, though, because polished wood can be slippery. A little polish goes a long way.

Extend the life of Hardwood Floors

Posted by - nynj-flooring

Hardwood floors can last many years if properly treated. When cared for, hardwood floors can last the lifetime of the home. Caring for the floors is simple, and will pay off over time as you need fewer repairs and will not have to replace the flooring, as might be required with a carpet or tile floor.

Dust is a major concern for hardwood floors because it can get into the grains on the wood and scratch the flooring. No matter how clean you try to be, children, pets, and various other things can cause your floors to gather dirt and dust.  Regular sweeping is a quick and easy way to ensure that your floors remain as dust-free as possible. There are mopping agents available that also help keep your floors clean and that help repel dust.

Another thing to keep in mind in order to protect your hardwood flooring is the furniture you put on it. Heavy furniture should never be pulled or dragged across the wood. This can cause deep scratches that have to be sanded out. Always get help if necessary and lift heavy objects rather than scooting them by yourself. This will save you and your floor from injury.

When unavoidable damage does occur to hardwood flooring, it can be fixed in a number of ways. Scratches and rough spots can be sanded smooth. A bit of sanding and a quick re-stain of the repaired spot will have your floor fixed in no time. There is no need for tearing it all out to have it replaced as would happen with a worn or stained carpet. And there is no expensive replacement of broken tile pieces. Stain is a great option for wood floors, it allows you to change the floor style without changing the floor. For instance, you can go from a light to a medium stain, or even a dark. The shade of the stain can completely transform the look of a room at a cost much less than that of replacing the entire flooring.
