8 Tips for Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors

Posted by - nynj-flooring

If you’ve ever watched a professional basketball game, you probably noticed the court’s shiny hardwood floors. How do they keep the hardwood gleaming? Can my hardwood installed by NYNJ Flooring look like that?

Of course it can. All you need to do is follow a few simple guidelines and your floors will shine for a lifetime.

  1. Consider going shoeless in your rooms with hardwood flooring. Remember sock hops in the 1950s? Kids would gather in the school gym on weekend nights to dance and shoes were not allowed on the gym’s wood floors. Tell your family that every day is a sock hop. Guests are just passing through, so don’t make them go barefoot.
  2. Make sure you have felt pads on the bottoms of all furniture or consider using throw rugs with non-skid pads. Also, carpet runners can be used in hallways that see heavy traffic.
  3. Toss your old straw broom and buy a newer model with soft bristles. Use it only when you need to pick up larger debris. Use a duster or static cloth mop for more frequent cleaning.
  4. If you have pets, keep their claws trimmed. Tiny little feet can make big scratches.
  5. Vacuuming hardwood is OK, but make sure the machine’s rollers are smooth and clean so you don’t leave scratches or scuffs. Most vacuums have a hardwood floor setting.
  6. Put about a cup of white vinegar in a mop bucket with warm water. Dip the mop and wring it out so it’s just damp. Avoid large amounts of water, especially on older floors. If you use a store-bought cleaning product, check the label to see if it’s safe for sealed wood floors.
  7. Don’t wax a hardwood floor that is sealed with polyurethane. The wax will build up and begin to make the wood look dull.
  8. Use a polish that is specifically made for hardwood flooring. Don’t overdo it, though, because polished wood can be slippery. A little polish goes a long way.

One of the biggest joys – and biggest headaches – of being a homeowner is increasing your home’s value. This leads to a more beautiful, more long-lasting home that will help you make more money on the real estate market, should you choose to sell it. Home upgrades are often expensive, though, and big overhauls aren’t possible for those on a budget. But there are a few things you can do to increase your home’s value without spending a ton. Real estate experts say that these five cost-effect projects make the most impact on your home’s value:

  • Kitchen and bath upgrades
  • Exterior siding repair and replacement
  • Landscaping
  • Interior paint
  • Hardwood flooring

Hardwood flooring is especially ideal. For the little amount of money you put into it, you get the highest return on your investment. Experts say hardwood flooring could increase your home’s value by as much as $10,000! Real estate agents have also reported that it’s much easier to sell homes with hardwood flooring. So if you’re thinking of selling, or just want to boost your home’s resale value, the choice is clear: Invest in good hardwood flooring! Wood floors are so much better than carpet, anyway. They’re easier to clean, easier to maintain, and give your home a modern look. Here are some other benefits to hardwood flooring:

  • Self-sustaining: Refinished wood flooring can last for decades with minimal effort
  • Ideal for allergies: Wood flooring doesn’t trap dust and allergens like carpet
  • Easy upkeep: Damaged floors just need sanding and refinishing, not a full re-installation like carpet
  • Durable: Stain and scratch resistant, wood flooring can handle families and foot traffic
  • Overall lower maintenance than carpeting

When you’re ready to commit to hardwood flooring, find a professional installation company to do the project for you. Though there are DIY flooring projects, they often lead to poor results. Professional installation doesn’t have to be expensive, and will guarantee quality results.

NJNY FlooringSure, oak and pine are great woods for hardwood floors. They are the most popular choices, after all. But maybe you want something more unique, something with a little more character. There are many wood types from around the world that are perfect for flooring and have a unique look. Hardwood floors made with exotic wood are a great choice for stylish families who are still looking for the ease and durability of wood floors.

The unique grain patterns and coloring of these different types of wood lend a lot of character to a room – and sometimes do a better job of hiding dirt and dust! They also add extra value to your home as a unique feature. There really are so many reasons to pass on oak and pine and look instead at cherry, hickory, and other offbeat styles. If you’re planning on installing or re-installing a hardwood floor, check out some of these exotic hardwoods. Here’s a brief overview of some of the most popular exotic woods:

Brazilian Cherry:  Don’t let the exotic name fool you: This wood is relatively cheap, though it does hail from South America. Modern homeowners love Brazilian Cherry because of its differing shades of red and bold grain pattern. It’s also very durable – perfect for families!

Eucalyptus: When most of us think of Eucalyptus, we think of the lovely flowers this tree produces. But its wood is just as lovely. Eucalyptus wood flooring often comes in large planks and has a swirling grain pattern full of knots. It’s a real eye-catcher, and very environmentally friendly.

Teak: Teak is a great choice for any outdoor sections of the home, or any area where there may be a lot of moisture. This wood is well-known for its ability to hold up against dampness. The fine grain and subtle grey-brown shade makes it a great neutral choice, too.

Mahogany: Mahogany furniture is beautiful, so naturally Mahogany flooring should be as well. Because of increased production, this traditionally expensive wood has really lowered in price. Durable, scratch-resistant, and beautiful in color, it’s the perfect choice for families and high-traffic homes.

Hickory: Hickory flooring is another great option for families. Often used in construction and outdoor furniture, it’s exceptionally hard and can take a beating pretty well. Full of knots and featuring a large grain pattern, it has a rustic look that’d work well in vintage-chic homes.

If you’re ready to make the switch to exotics, NYNJ Flooring can help you choose the perfect wood for your offbeat new look.

Our company has the widest selection of woods in the New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania area. We pride ourselves in our large inventory, which has made us the number-one choice for Mid-Atlantic homes looking to do something unique with their floors. We’ll help you every step of the way, from in-home consultations where we determine which kind of wood and stain is right for you, to the final walk-through, where we make sure you’re 100% pleased with your renovation.
